Australian opera singer who was internationally recognized for her soprano voice and later became a singing teacher at the Melbourne Conservatorium.
She studied music and played in concerts around Melbourne as a teenager.
Although many people thought her voice was well-suited for Mozart, she never sang any of his work.

Nellie Melba's death was caused by sepsis.
She returned to Australia but died in St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, in 1931, aged 69, of septicaemia which had developed after facial surgery in Europe some time before. She was given an elaborate funeral from Scots’ Church, Melbourne, which her father had built and where as a teenager she had sung in the choir.
