English monarch who ruled from 1936 until 1952. During the 1930s and ’40s, he served as the final emperor of British-controlled India. His oldest daughter, Elizabeth II, became Queen of England.
After training at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, he briefly studied at Trinity College, Cambridge.
During his reign, the British Empire dissolved into the Commonwealth of Nations; World War II began and ended; and the United States and the Soviet Union became the world’s great powers.

The King failed to recover from a lung operation, and died in his sleep on 6 February 1952 at Sandringham; he was aged 56.
