Nationalist Member of the Parliament of Western Australia from 1921 to 1924. She was known as a strong advocate for women’s health and the welfare of disadvantaged groups.
She lived with her grandmother after studying at Perth boarding school as a teen.
She was a freemason and her portrait is featured on the back of Australia’s $50 note.
How did Edith Cowan die?
Edith Cowan's death was caused by pancreatic cancer.
Following an extended period of ill-health Cowan died of pancreatic cancer at the Avro Hospital, Subiaco on 9 June 1932, at the age of 70. After a short service at St. Mary’s Church, West Perth, a large public funeral was held at Karrakatta Cemetery where she was buried.
