He was a star football player in high school, but turned down a football scholarship from Michigan State so that he could sign with the Phillies.
In 1970, while playing for the California Angels, he was both the AL Batting Champion, and an All-Star selection.

He was 72. The cause was complications of prostate cancer, his son, Alex Jr., said. A quick-wristed line-drive hitter, Johnson was a boon to batting orders on eight major league teams in 13 seasons.
